Covid-19 Through the Eyes of Ethiopian Social Entrepreneurs

The pandemic situation in Ethiopia is not comparable to that in Europe.

The Situation in Ethiopia

Developing countries like Ethiopia face many challenges, and adding global pandemic definitely adds a whole new dimension to the operations of businesses like us.

There is a large degree of uncertainty that is nearly impossible to plan around or mitigate against. The poor distribution of the vaccine to Africa has meant that we have about 10%-12% the vaccination rate of Europe.

Social Distancing is not Possible for Everyone.

This means preventative measures of fighting Covid-19 are even more vital. Even this has its challenges though. As Dr. Jagadish Hiremath said in a viral tweet “Social distancing is a privilege. It means you live in a house large enough to practice it. Washing your hands is a privilege too. It means you have access to running water. Hand sanitizers are a privilege. It means you have the money to buy them.”

Cohesion that Encourages

This is the reality most people in Ethiopia are facing, and the risks we work around. Through all this, we remain optimistic and hopeful because this is what we see when we look at our staff. They come in everyday hopeful and eager to get to work. I believe it’s a common virtue in all of us as humans, and ultimately that what we at ENZI and EFC are aiming to connect.

We hope that when you see our products, you also see the beautiful people who have crafted them. We hope to inspire you to support indigenous solutions to our problems and partner with us on creating a better future. We believe that together, as a collective of positive minded humans we can overcome just about anything.

The Story of ENZIs First Steps.

We never thought it would take over 10 years to get ENZI off the ground when we started. If we are honest, we almost quit several times. The challenges just seemed too great for myself and the co-founder/Creative Director Jawad Braye to overcome.
